Cadets, instructors, members and friends of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, it is a pleasure to join you today as we celebrate the Year of the Air Cadet in Manitoba.
The Royal Canadian Air Cadets have a proud history of inspiring generations of Canadians to set their sights high.
This organization does that, not just by providing opportunities to explore aviation and get behind the controls of a glider or even an airplane.
Air Cadets also aim for the sky when they develop skills in sports, music, marksmanship, public speaking, outdoor survival and other activities supported by the Air Cadet League of Manitoba.
They aim high when they strengthen those personal virtues of discipline, patriotism and determination that are a part of Air Cadet life.
And of course Air Cadets are encouraged to reach for the top by the scholarships and bursaries offered by the Air Cadet League.
Clearly, taking on the challenge of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets offers young people many opportunities for personal, social, physical, and intellectual growth and development.
And so therefore it is wonderful to see youth from across our province - from north and south and rural and urban areas - benefitting from this experience.
As Cadets you owe a debt of gratitude to the instructors, volunteers, and sponsors who make your involvement in this program possible.
And I am sure that with the leadership skills you are developing, you are learning to give thanks for that by giving back to society. There would be no better way of showing what Air Cadets has meant to you than to make volunteer service and leadership an ongoing part of your life.
Making your province and your country the best they can be is another way of aiming high. And that's what Air Cadets do. That's you!
Congratulations on 75 years!
Thank you. Merci. Meegwetch. Have a wonderful summer.
Check out the Manitoba Air Cadet League's Facebook page for more photos of the events.

LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR'S RECEPTION FOR THE AIR CADET COMMUNITY

The Honourable Janice C. Filmon, C.M., O.M.. Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, is shown accepting a gift of appreciation from the Chair of the Manitoba Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada, Doug McLennan, for her support for the Air Cadet Program's 75th Anniversary celebrations during a Reception she hosted for the Manitoba Air Cadet Community at her official residence on October 6, 2016.
Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
Leaders, role models, members of the Air Cadet League of Canada - it is a pleasure to welcome you to Government House, here on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature and at the heart of Treaty One territory. We celebrate 75 years of showing young Manitobans that the sky's the limit.
In my time as Lieutenant Governor, I've had the pleasure of meeting quite a number of young Manitobans who are learning about leadership and community service.
Equally, I've had the great pleasure of meeting many adults who are helping make that possible through personal leadership and philanthropy.
Tonight, I am pleased to see both groups gathering to celebrate the long and successful history of the Air Cadet League of Canada in our province.
Manitoba has a rich aviation history, one that includes the training facilities for the Commonwealth Air Training Program and providing many pilots and air crew during the Second World War.
And some of those brave fliers were among the first graduates of Manitoba's Air Cadet squadrons.
Since then, the Air Cadets have provided generations of Manitobans with peacetime opportunities to learn personal discipline, practise fitness and survival skills, earn scholarships and learn to fly.
And one of the special things about Air Cadets is that through the efforts of members of the League, these opportunities are available all across our province to young people, regardless of their personal finances.
Cadets can learn many things through their experience, but nothing is more important than the lesson they see modelled by the members of the Air Cadet League. Through them, cadets learn to take personal responsibility for enhancing life in their province and country.
In the words of the poet and Royal Canadian Air Force pilot John Magee, Air Cadets have the opportunity to "slip the surly bonds of earth."
But they also learn of the dedication and discipline that you need before you can dream of "dancing the skies on laughter-silvered wings."
I thank all of those leaders, sponsors and donors who make it possible for Manitoba's cadets to have both kinds of life-enhancing lessons.
Thank you, Merci, Meegwich.
